Just a recommendation, but you must have an open mind to accept this as a possibilty for you. You could do what I am doing and get rid of your vehicle, you do get free bus fare as a student. If you can sell it, that would open up $$$$ from car loan payments (if you have them), gas, repairs, insurance, oil changes and services, new tires every couple years, registration, tickets, almost certain catastophic accidents that occur at least once during your lifetime- medical bills, disabilities, costly repairs resulting. There is a strong possibility of having to pay large unexpected sums of money that have to do with driving a car. Not to mention the fact all the interest you would not have to pay on credit cards and loans etc, because you could use that extra dough from not having a car for paying it off much more quickly. Or better yet, not have to get them in the first place. You would also have better credit and lower home mortgage rates. I would never buy a home in today's or tommorrow's economy anyway, it is no longer an asset, very far from it. But that is a subject for another posting. Anyway, do you have any idea how much money you would save while shopping as the result of relying on a bike, or your own two feet? How would you take all of that junk home with you? Unneeded purchases are greatly reduced. You could also invest all that saved money for retirement. You would do alot more walking or riding a bike which will make you much more healthy and save you alot on health-care costs when you get older. Your life would be more simple. Since you exercise more, you will be more healthy psycologicaly, and that will get you better paying jobs. Plus it is better on the enviroment. I went about 5 years as an adult without driving a car, it can be done.
STATS:
Here is rough example of how much I am saving by selling my truck, paying off my 4 year loan, and relieving myself of the associated expenses for the next 4 years:
Loan: $180/mo x 48 mo = $8640, Ins: $85/mo x 48 mo = $4080, Gas: $200/mo x 48 mo = $9600, repairs: abt $1000, tires(1 set) abt $600, oil changes(16x) $800, tune-ups abt $1000, registration abt $500, tickets abt. $500.
$26,520 is the amount spent on my vehicle in 4 years, excluding major repairs, accidents, and a few other costly factors. Transportation should only be %10 of your income! Wouldn't you much rather use that money for paying for school or something else of value?
