Views on Visual Rhetoric

Everywhere you look now days there are advertisements trying to catch your attention. Whether you are watching TV, searching on the internet or browsing on Facebook there is always an ad in the picture. I work at an internet marketing firm and am exposed to various forms of advertising done by business owners nearly every day. As you can imagine I have a pretty good understanding about how advertising works and some of the techniques used to make you feel certain emotions and feel compelled to view an ad that catches your interest. Although I may work in advertising, some of the exercises that we have done in class have made me become more aware of the wide variety of techniques that advertisers use. Not only do I see the ads and the 'call to action' anymore, I have developed more of an understanding of why certain objects, colors, and general ideas have been included in ads that may not be so obvious. I definitely think that in the future I will be more conscious of all aspects that are included in advertisements whether it be the color, perspective, tone, or even the overall idea of what the ad is getting at.
